When recovering from hip surgery, it is extremely important to listen to your surgeon. Doing too much too early on, or not doing enough, can influence your recovery.
These 5 recommended tips can apply to almost any hip surgery, ranging from fracture surgeries to double hip replacement.
1. Stay on Top of Pain Medication
After getting hip surgery, it is extremely important to stay on top of the medication your hip surgeon prescribes to you. When you aren’t feeling pain, it is easy to think that you can take a break from taking medication; however, not staying on top of medication can lead to immense pain, especially the first few days after surgery.
If you have concerns about taking certain types of pain medications, be sure to talk to your surgeon about these concerns, so that they can come up with an alternative solution.
2. Have Family and Friends Help You
It will be extremely beneficial to your healing to have loved ones by your side during this time. If you live with a partner or someone else, it is important to discuss how you will need support during this process.
If you live alone, consider asking someone to stay with you for a couple of weeks. Healing will be much easier if you have someone to help get you from place to place, prepare food, bring you things, and help with any additional recommendations your hip surgeon may recommend.
If you don’t feel comfortable asking someone to help you out, consider hiring someone to stay in your home for a few weeks while you recover.
3. Plan Ahead
Recovery from hip surgery may be long and challenging depending on the type of surgery you have and how your body responds to it.
It is important to plan ahead based on work and life events that may come up. If you work a physical job, you may need to take quite a bit of time off. Talk to your orthopedic surgeon and make sure to take the amount of time off from work that they recommend.
4. Make a Comfortable Space for Yourself
You will likely be sleeping a lot during recovery, so it is important to have an accessible, comfortable space to rest in. Make sure you have a comfortable chair to sit in on the first floor with everything you may need nearby.
It also may be beneficial to move your bed to the first floor, so that you don’t have to go up the stairs to sleep.
5. Use a Walker or a Cane
Using a walker or a cane will help you move around from place to place, while ensuring that you don’t fall and cause damage during your recovery. Talk to your hip doctor about what option will work best for you for you.
If you or a loved one is recovering from hip surgery, be sure to pay attention to the recommended recovery tips from your doctor. If you have questions or concerns during the process, it is best to seek help from your doctor, as every patient is different.
