Hi, my name is Dr. Sam Crosby and I am a hand and upper extremity surgeon at Elite Sports Medicine and Orthopedics. I specialize in surgery of the elbow, shoulder, wrist, and hand.
Did You Always Want to Be a Doctor?
I grew up knowing that I wanted to help people. I always enjoyed science and the human body, but it was not until college that I realized I wanted to be a doctor.
In college, I followed my uncle who is a cardiac surgeon. I had the opportunity to observe a couple open-heart surgeries, which is what really sealed the deal for me.
From there I went to medical school.
Why Did You Become an Orthopedic Surgeon?
During medical school, you get to sample a little bit of everything, and I knew I wanted to do surgery. In orthopedics, what really appealed to me was that people got better, and you got to improve their quality of life. Most importantly, you can help them return to the lifestyle they want.
That appealed to me, as well as the opportunity to work with athletes.
At that point, I decided to be an orthopedic surgeon.
How Did You Choose Your Subspecialty of Hand and Upper Extremity?
While I was at Vanderbilt, I decided to focus on hand and upper extremity surgery. I was intrigued by the variety in working with elbow, shoulder, wrist, and hand pain and conditions.
Hand and upper extremity also allows you to work with patients from all walks of life. I am fortunate to work with patients of all ages and backgrounds, from working with pediatric patients to those with degenerative conditions like hand arthritis.
What Can You Expect From Dr. Crosby as Your Hand Specialist?
I value transparency and honesty in my practice. One of the most difficult aspects of my job is preparing people for surgery.
There is no way I can do that in a fifteen-minute conversation. There is just nothing you can do in the office to prepare someone for the episode of surgery.
But one of the things you can do is prepare them for the milestones they are going to hit and those small little things along the way.
It is extremely important to me that I am available for any questions or concerns that my patients have.
What Do You Enjoy About Being an Orthopedic Doctor?
One of the most rewarding parts of being an orthopedist is meeting someone at their worst – whether that is in the emergency department or in the office with splints, casts, and bandages – and being able to take them from that point back to their normal self.
It creats a special relationship between the provider and the patient.
Do You Enjoy Working With Pediatric Patients?
I love working with kids, and pediatric patients add a different dynamic to my orthopedic practice.
Kids are fun, and they are honest and open. They also seem to come in with new surprises.
The truth is that kids heal very well. I always tell parents if I could make everybody heal the way kids do, my job would be much easier.
What Differentiates Elite From Other Orthopedic Practices?
What makes Elite special, and why I chose to practice here, is the people.
A big part of that is the other orthopedic surgeons. I really like and trust my partners, I would let any of them perform surgery on me. Having good doctors creates a culture of patient care.
We are also focused on taking care of the whole patient. In a way, it is a one-stop-shop. You can get physical therapy and MRIs in house.
Everything we do from the time you walk into the door to the time that you leave is geared towards taking care of the patient. That was the number one factor for me in joining Elite.
Dr. Samuel Crosby is an orthopedic surgeon that subspecializes in hand and upper extremity. He has been providing outstanding patient care with Elite since 2015 and has quickly become one of the most established hand doctors in Nashville, TN, and Franklin, TN.
