Dr. Gilbert is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in primary and revision total joint replacement of the hip and knee. He brings advanced training in complex joint replacement procedures, along with a patient-first approach focused on shared decision-making and helping patients return to the activities and lifestyles they enjoy.
Dr. Gilbert sees patients at Elite Sports Medicine + Orthopedics’ Midtown and Franklin locations.
Specialized Expertise in Hip and Knee Replacement
Dr. Gilbert specializes in both primary and revision total joint replacement of the hip and knee. Following his orthopedic surgery residency, he completed an Adult Reconstruction Fellowship at Duke University, where he received advanced training in complex hip and knee replacement procedures, including:
- Direct anterior total hip replacement
- Muscle-sparing and partial knee replacement
- Complex primary joint replacement
- Revision hip and knee replacement
- Technology-assisted hip and knee replacement surgery
His specialized fellowship training allows Dr. Gilbert to treat a wide range of hip and knee conditions and develop individualized treatment plans based on each patient’s needs, goals, and lifestyle.
An Extensive Background in Orthopedic Surgery
A Nashville native, Dr. Gilbert grew up in Middle Tennessee before moving to Rome, Georgia, where he attended Darlington School. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Georgia, graduating cum laude, before earning his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia.
Dr. Gilbert then returned to Nashville to complete his orthopedic surgery residency at Vanderbilt University. Throughout his training, he distinguished himself as both a clinician and leader. He was elected by faculty and peers as Administrative Chief Resident and was nominated by his department as an American Orthopaedic Association Resident Leader.
During his residency at Vanderbilt, Dr. Gilbert also served on the resident education, program evaluation, and residency selection committees. Following residency, he completed his Adult Reconstruction Fellowship at Duke University, further developing his expertise in advanced hip and knee replacement surgery.
A Commitment to Patient-Centered Joint Replacement Care
Dr. Gilbert is passionate about helping patients regain mobility and return to the activities that are important to them. His approach to care is centered on putting the patient first, with an emphasis on shared decision-making and compassionate, evidence-based treatment.
He works closely with each patient to understand their individual goals and lifestyle before developing a treatment plan. Whether a patient is considering joint replacement for the first time or requires revision surgery following a previous replacement, Dr. Gilbert brings specialized training and a personalized approach to their care.
Contributing to Orthopedic Education and Research
In addition to his clinical training, Dr. Gilbert has contributed to orthopedic research and education throughout his career. He has been involved in multiple peer-reviewed publications and has presented his work at regional and national meetings.
His leadership and involvement in orthopedic education during residency reflect his commitment to advancing the field and continuing to provide patients with evidence-based orthopedic care.
Serving Middle Tennessee
As a Nashville native, Dr. Gilbert is excited to return to his hometown and serve patients throughout Middle Tennessee.
His connection to the community, combined with his specialized training in adult reconstruction and joint replacement, allows him to provide advanced hip and knee care close to home.

Outside of orthopedics, Dr. Gilbert enjoys spending time with his wife, daughter, and dog. A devoted UGA football fan, he also enjoys golf, traveling, fishing, hunting, and exploring Nashville’s restaurant and music scenes.
