About Dr. Gilbert
Dr. William B. Gilbert Jr., MD, is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in primary and revision total joint replacement of the hip and knee. He sees patients at Elite Sports Medicine + Orthopedics’ Midtown and Franklin locations.
Dr. Gilbert grew up in Nashville before moving to Rome, Georgia, where he attended Darlington School. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Georgia, graduating cum laude, followed by a Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia. He then returned to Nashville to complete his orthopedic surgery residency at Vanderbilt University.
Following residency, Dr. Gilbert completed an Adult Reconstruction Fellowship at Duke University, gaining advanced training in complex primary and revision hip and knee replacement — including direct anterior total hip replacement, muscle-sparing and partial knee replacement, and technology-assisted hip and knee replacement surgery.
Throughout his training, Dr. Gilbert distinguished himself as a clinician and leader. He was elected by faculty and peers as Administrative Chief Resident and nominated by the department as an American Orthopaedic Association Resident Leader. At Vanderbilt, he served on the resident education, program evaluation, and residency selection committees. He has contributed to multiple peer-reviewed publications and presented his work at regional and national meetings.
Dr. Gilbert is passionate about serving his community through joint replacement care. His approach is built on putting the patient first — with shared decision-making and compassionate, evidence-based treatment tailored to each patient’s individual goals and lifestyle.
Outside of orthopedics, Dr. Gilbert enjoys spending time with his wife, daughter, and dog. A devoted UGA football fan, he also enjoys golf, traveling, fishing, hunting, and exploring Nashville’s restaurant and music scenes.
